The Valentine's Day Capsule

If you know Wunderkin, you know a polka dot tulle bow is a bit of a departure from our go to adventure-inspired collections, but Valentine’s day sure is a fun holiday to step outside the box. Our Valentine’s collection, launching January 15th at 10am Mountain Time, features a vibrant selection of pink bows inspired by that special LOVE between a mom and daughter. To capture this collection we held a simple photoshoot at our Wunderkin headquarters in Denver, Colorado and let the bows speak for themselves.

Looking on at their littles giggling in front of camera were five proud mamas. Mamas from different backgrounds, mamas with different parenting styles, mammas with truly one-of-a-kind daughters. It’s always a joy to see the personalities of the kids we get to work with and the mamas who are raising them. Having a headquarters outfitted with a space for photoshoots has been an awesome way to build relationships with local littles. Each time we hold a photoshoot, parents, siblings, and even grandparents tag along. We love the energy that families bring to our photoshoots. It somehow makes each photograph we take that much more authentic.

If you’ve been following Wunderkin for any amount of time, you will have definitely seen this ruffled romper (below) before. It has literally been in over a dozen Wunderkin photoshoots and still looks brand new. We love heirloom pieces like this because they are so timeless. If you don’t know Daughter Co, it is a natural, ethical childrenswear company out of Australia. All of their clothing is made from unique cotton and linen fabrics sourced from around the globe.

For this photoshoot, our awesome photographer Anna Boardman got some authentic giggles out of our mini models, asking them to repeat funny phrases throughout the entire shoot. Note to all the mamas out there trying to snap some good candids of their littles. 😉  The “Noelle Blouse” in cream is from one of our new favorite brands, CoCo and Manu. You can find the exact top here. It was the perfect neutral compliment to an 80’s pony featuring our “Darling Dot” Oversized Schoolgirl and our newest Wunderkin velvet, “Sweetheart.”

When we feature babies in a photoshoot, we never quite know if we caught them on a good day or bad day. If only you could see us mamas and Wunderkin employees dancing to “Baby Shark” in attempt to get the perfect shots.  We make total goofs of ourselves but it’s totally worth it.  It was a happy coincidence that this pink chair from Anthropologie (which we fondly refer to as the “mermaid chair) matched perfectly with all things Valentine’s Day.

We at Wunderkin are so excited for this collection, not just because it’s popping with pink, but because it is the first collection where we are debuting two new colors of nylon headbands. Up until now we have featured only one shade of nylon for our headband bow option (Shade 1). Through recent trials and tribulations we found this was not as inclusive as we as a company needed to be. We know it is long overdue, but you can now order any of the headband bows in this collection (and any collection here after), in three natural shades.

We hope this collection is as fun as we think it is! Let us know what you think in the comments below. Sign up for Wunderkin Co’s newsletter to receive new collection updates straight to your email and follow along with Wunderkindred to receive weekly content created for women raising adventurous children and pursuing lives they love.

Happy early Valentine’s Day! We hope your day and all days are filled with hugs, kisses and cuddles from your tiny humans.

A Classics Collection for the Everyday

A Classics Collection for the Everyday

Each year we release a new collection of classic hair bows made for everyday adventures. Most often this collection features a curated selection of simple, easily-styled fabrics, seasonal customer favorites, and a couple of fun prints we think resonate all year round. When we designed this years classics collection, we wanted it to speak to the real day to day moments of our customers. So instead of holding a professional photoshoot with meticulously dressed minis, we put styling in the hands of some amazing Instagram mamas and asked them to style these bows as they would any day of the week. The results were more than we could hope for. We loved seeing our bows accompanying brave little girls on their everyday adventures, and can’t wait to see them in yours too!

@jenwithJUSTonen

Jen of @jenwithjustonen captured her curly-haired cuties out at breakfast in our “Piney River Pink” Medium Schoolgirl and “Honeysuckle” Mini Pinwheel Pigtail Set. What’s better than whipped cream topped crepes to start the day? Not much!

@aenny04

If you follow Aenny Chung on Instagram, you know that her family doesn’t go far with our their sweet pup Bella. That includes a trip to New York City! This little city girl in the making is wearing our “Antique Pink” Oversized Pinwheel and “Rebecca” Mini Pinwheel.

@mrshazleyandababy

Getting ready for the day is often an adventure in itself, especially when you have a newborn like one of our favorite influencers, Leah Hazley.  Sweet big sis is wearing our Thick Retro Knot in “Piney River Pink” and our Petite Schoolgirl Pigtail Set in “Rebecca” while baby is wearing our “Telluride” Petal bow. Recognize any of these fabrics? “Piney River” and “Telluride” are two customer favorites from our Fall 2018 collection and have been added to the new Classics collection. We just can’t get enough.

@raising.little.women

Let’s be honest here. A day spent in and around home is really common for most of us.  Raising four girls? Not quite as common! But Belinda Love of @raising.little.women makes it look easy. It’s been amazing to see her girls grow. Belinda’s girls have styled Wunderkin bows since the Free Babes days and we are always jazzed when we see their everyday adventures accompanied by our bows.

@sbrathen

Susan Brathen is one of our all-time favorite Instagram mamas. Her photography is breathtaking and she and her daughter are always fun outdoor adventures, no matter the weather. Pictured below, our “Maple” Oversized Schoolgirl, “Rebecca” Oversized Pinwheel and “Jade” Petite Schoolgirl Pigtail Set.

@cin.n

And here’s to those little moments we share with our daughters, and the bow that is a symbol of raising them to be confident, curious and forever adventurous. We love how Cindy of @cin.n captured these sweet giggly moments with her mini me. Pictured below our Oversized Schoolgirl in “Piney River Pink” and “Telluride,” and our Medium Pinwheel in “Rebecca.”

@sheliamadrigal

Sheila Madrigal’s trio of adorable daughters have been a part of the Wunderkin family for years. We’ve loved watching this family grow and have been lucky enough to work with them on past photoshoots. Sheila captures the most beautiful sister moments on her Instagram and we get absolutely giddy when they include Wunderkin bows like the “Rebecca” Oversized Retro Knot and the “Honeysuckle” Oversized Pinwheel below.

@kaitlin_harris

And here’s to those little adventurers in the making. When walking isn’t quite yet your little’s thing those moments together are extra special. We hope that whenever you take a photo of your little one in a Wunderkin bow, that you’re creating a single moment that you’ll always remember.

@megbed

We’re a bit jealous that Meg Beddes of @megbed has double the fun with her twin toddlers. Just a simple moment at home makes for two times the cuteness in our “Antique Pink” and “Rebecca” Oversized Pinwheels.

@tatianamikhailovna

Adventure is out there, and we love when our bows get to tag along. A simple “Paprika” Petite Schoolgirl bow or a “Pearl” Petite Pigtail Set are some of our favorite classics. They’ve both been part of our Classics Collection for years. Indoors or out, we love seeing your everyday adventures just like this.

@thejoyfultribe

April Bondi of @thejoyfultribe just added a new addition to their family in the form of a sweet baby bow, so we know these little moments with big sis are extra special. Wearing our “Piney River Ranch” Oversized Pinwheel and “Honeysuckle” Oversized Schoolgirl, we love how April always styles our bows in a simply classic way.

Share your everyday adventures with us by tagging your Instagram photos with @wunderkin_co. Thank you for including us in life’s epic journey.

A Letter From The Owner

Real TalkBy
A Letter From The Owner

Dear Customers,

We owe you an apology.

We are deeply sorry that we have let you down by not taking action on suggestions to create a more inclusive environment within our brand. We have acted in the spirit of self-preservation and defensiveness, missing critical opportunities to grow into the company we hope to be. We are sorry that we have given lip-service to ideas without follow-through. We are sorry that in moderating social media groups, we have censored voices. We have discussed inclusivity at our headquarters often, but realize there is so much depth to this topic and we have only scratched the surface. We see there is so much to do. And we want to.

Here’s our plan:

Immediately, we are working with a diversity consultant who will help educate and bring light to areas we have not seen in the past. We are also assembling an official paid panel of diverse women to help bring new voices and frame of reference to our brand. The formation and structure of this panel will be guided by our diversity consultant. By the end of this week, we will announce our new panel application process and offer positions to those who applied in April 2018.

Additionally, we are launching two new shades of nylon headbands, that will be available with our Valentine’s Day launch on January 15th. We would also love to provide each of you with opportunity to switch your current headband nylons to our new nylon shades. Details on these items are outlined below. We hope you will share your opinions of the new style with us!

We have re-opened our Wunderkin Family Facebook page with new ground rules, and are in the process of finalizing a new team of admins. We have a strict, no-censoring policy, with the exclusion of hate-speech, and an intention to make the group a place where difficult discussions can be had with respect. It will be a safe space for mothers to connect on these tough, real discussions about everyday life, as well as topics of parenthood and raising confident kids, family adventure, and fashion.

Long term, we will work with our consultant to expand the diversity and voices at our headquarters, create a more inclusive social media and brand strategy, and make inclusivity the forefront of our growth-plan for 2019 and beyond. We will continue to work with local refugee organizations as well to expand the voices within our workforce.

Your brave, curious, kind, creative, and joyful children are the heart and soul of our brand. They are what Wunderkin means to all of us, and we are so grateful to be a part of their adventures. And you, brave mamas, are the reason we go to work every day and strive to be better and better. Thank you for supporting us in the past, and we are committed to earning this support in the future by listening and responding to all of the voices in our community here.

If you would like to try one of our new shades of nylon headbands, please fill out the form below, and we will send the first 150 applicants a free bow. Everyone else who applies will receive a complimentary sample pack of our two new shades. We would love your feedback, and we would love to see and share your images.

If you have current Wunderkin headbands and would like to send them in for a retie in one of our two new shades, you can see the form below as well.

Thank you for your continued support as we grow as a brand. As a small company, we will work as quickly as possible to implement these changes and to evolve our brand for the better. This will be a process, but one for which I am taking personal ownership. If you see an area where we can do better, please feel free to reach out to me at hillary@wunderkinco.com and I will do my best to respond.

Thank you,

Hillary + The Wunderkin Team

My Favorite Room: Stacie Lang

My Favorite Room: Stacie Lang

When we began creating our “My Favorite Room” blog series, one of the first people we wanted to feature was Stacie Lang of Alice and Ames. Apart from her simply beautiful taste, Stacie is a wonderful friend, wife, mama, and the ultimate business owner. We had a little Q + A with Stacie to learn more about her interior decorating style (and let’s be honest) to learn how we can basically replicate it! Scroll down to get a sneak peek into Stacie’s favorite room in her home, her living room.

━━━━━━━

STACIE’S FAVORITE ROOM

Hi! I’m Stacy. We’re Arizona natives and moved into our home about three years ago with our three daughters. We were initially drawn to this house because of the open floor plan, the big kitchen island (I spent half my childhood and teenage years on my parent’s kitchen island, so this is a feature that I really loved), and because of the utility room off the garage that served as the perfect laundry room/office space. We’re big time homebodies so really loving where we live and the functionality of our home was important to us. While you can find us perusing Zillow almost nightly for different floor plans, neighborhoods, or homes in totally different states, we really do feel right at home for the stage of life we’re in and love where we live.

1.) Why is this your favorite room in your house?

With the help and encouragement of a friend who is a skilled interior decorator, this was the first and only room in our house that was fully furnished and decorated for the first couple years of living in our new home. It felt finished and homey, and since this is a room that mostly sees book reading, piano practice, and the occasional hide-and-seeker, it’s not difficult to keep this space clean, which scores major points with me.

2.) Where did you pull design inspiration from?

Being photographers, we already had a ton of photos and framed art that we had collected, so a big gallery wall was a must for us. We already had the light-colored CB2 couch upon moving in, so we chose a dark accent wall for this room, which was a fun contrast from the rest of our white walls throughout the house.

3.) What is your favorite piece in the room and what’s the story behind it?

My favorite piece is most likely the piano. We found it second-hand and since Geoff and I both quit playing as kids (and wish we hadn’t!), we have high hopes that our kids enjoy learning how to play and stick with it. Our oldest has been taking lessons from my Mom every week for the last couple years and loves it so far. Hearing her practice (despite having a very open, echo-y floor plan!), is always a highlight of my day. And most likely my neighbors, too.

4.) What is your favorite color palette to decorate in?

I’m always drawn to light neutrals for bigger or more permanent spaces like paint and furniture (which I know is crazy with kids, one day I’ll learn!), and then I like adding pops of subtle color in smaller doses with pillows, rugs, or art.

5.) Where are your favorite places to shop for home décor?

I’m not very good about pulling the trigger on home décor and furniture, mostly because I love changing things up so I really have to love something before committing, but a few places I always love to window shop regularly are Schoolhouse, CB2, OfferUp, Article, Loom + Kiln, Blu Dot, Industry West, Design Within Reach, Hay, Interior Define, Society6, Parachute Home, and West Elm.

6.) How would you describe your aesthetic?

Clean and simple, with mid-century elements. I’ve always been a less-is-more person, and I function best in a neat, minimal space. Working from home and spending so much time within the walls of my own house, it’s really important for me to keep things as organized, functional, and clutter-free as possible, otherwise I get really frazzled. You guessed it, I can be a little OCD!

7.) What are some of your favorite lifestyle or home decor blogs/Instagrammers?

Off the top of my head, I love to look at feeds like @em_henderson, @apartmenttherapy, @dominomag, @amberinteriors, @bradytolbert, @jennykomenda, and @studiomcgee.

Two Days, Two Ways: Atlanta City Guide

Two Days, Two Ways: Atlanta City Guide

There are hip to-do guides for city locals and there are traditional travel guides for tourists, but what if you and your family want to experience a little bit of both? Our “Two Days, Two Ways” series will give you a little taste of the day in the life of a tourist AND a local.

Hi! My name is Courtney (@mrscourtneycooper). I’m a mama to two little ones, Bailey, 6, and Maxwell, 20 months. I’ve lived in Atlanta, GA for 14 years. I moved here with my family when I was in high school! I love that GA has to offer city life and the country life all within an hours drive! We get to experience seasons and it’s just so beautiful in the fall time! I’ve listed my top favorite places to eat and see with my family and I hope you enjoy my tour around our city!

DAY ONE: LIKE A TOURIST

BREAKFAST AT GENERAL MUIR

This place has the best breakfast and brunch. General Muir is a modern American restaurant inspired by classic New York Jewish deli. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, and offers an espresso bar serving locally-roasted Batdorf & Bronson coffee as well as a full bar of wine, beer, spirits, and cocktails.

 VISIT TO ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN

We love that this attraction has a huge children’s garden to play in! This is the best place to get some fresh air. Depending on the day or month you are visiting, there are different activities like storybook time or a children’s rid-on train. Find a calendar for family activities here.

LUNCH AT FOX BROTHERS BBQ

Okay –  if you come to Atlanta, this is a MUST! Hello fried ribs 🤤 it can be a little packed at times but man- it’s worth the wait!

SWEET TREAT AT JENI’S ICE CREAMS

ADVENTURING AT MARIETTA SQUARE

There is tons of exploring to do, coffee, donuts, and a playground for the kids. This is my favorite place to come when I need to get out of the house with the kids! We also ice skate here at the outdoor skating rink every winter!

DINNER AT ANTICO’S PIZZA

 This place is BYOD (bring your own drinks) and all seating is family style- not to mention they have the best pizzas in town!

DAY 2: LIKE A LOCAL

BREAKFAST AT BREAD AND BUTTERFLY

This place has a great brunch and cute photo ops!

A VISIT TO SOUTHERN BELLE FARMS

This is the perfect place for berry picking in the spring, peach picking and farm animals in the summer, and pumpkin patches in the fall! The also make the best homemade peach and strawberry ice cream 🤤

LUNCH AT SHAKE SHACK

I know Shake Shack isn’t only available in Atlanta, but Shake Shack is an easy go-to for families. It’s causal, laid back, and has great burgers and milkshakes!

AFTERNOON AT SWEET WATER PARK

This is hands down Bailey’s favorite place. Hiking, swimming in the creek, and tons of history here! Sweetwater Creek State Park has a wooded trail trail that leads to the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill burned during the Civil War.  You can also have park rangers lead informative hikes to these areas throughout the year.

PICK-ME-UP AT CAFE ITERMEZZO

The white hot chocolate – “OMG”

DINNER AT BARTACO

 I’ve tried all the Mexican places around! 😂 I love that this has roomy booths as well as patio seating!
